In a powerful demonstration of resilience, innovation, and forward-thinking community development, the DARE Smart Mom Project has successfully completed a key agricultural milestone: the establishment of a fully operational lettuce production system—from nursery setup to seed planting.

Implemented by DivaFam, sponsored by the Mastercard Foundation, and awarded by UNESCO, this initiative continues to redefine what inclusive, climate-smart empowerment looks like for young mothers in underserved communities.

Building the Foundation: Where Growth Begins

The process began with the strategic demarcation of land, ensuring optimal use of space, proper planning, and long-term scalability. This was followed by comprehensive land preparation, where participants were guided through soil conditioning techniques to improve fertility, structure, and water retention.

With precision and care, nursery beds were raised, creating a controlled environment for healthy germination. The final stage—seed planting of lettuce—marked the transition from preparation to production, signaling the beginning of a sustainable agricultural journey.

Every step was hands-on, practical, and rooted in best practices for climate-smart agriculture, equipping participants not just with skills, but with systems they can replicate and scale.

Why Lettuce? A Strategic Crop for Quick Impact

Lettuce was selected deliberately for its:

  • Short growth cycle, enabling quick harvest and income generation
  • High market demand, especially in urban and peri-urban markets
  • Low space requirements, making it ideal for smallholder farming
  • Nutritional value, contributing to improved household diets

This positions participants to achieve both food security and financial stability within a relatively short timeframe.

Empowering Young Mothers Through Agribusiness

For the young mothers involved, this is more than farming—it is a gateway to economic independence and dignity.

The hands-on training in nursery management, bed preparation, and crop cultivation has transformed participants into emerging agripreneurs capable of:

  • Producing high-quality vegetables for local markets
  • Managing small-scale farms efficiently
  • Applying sustainable farming techniques
  • Generating consistent income without leaving their communities

This directly reduces the need for risky migration and opens up localized economic opportunities.

Climate Action at the Community Level

This intervention is deeply aligned with climate resilience and environmental sustainability.

By promoting efficient land use, soil health management, and sustainable crop production, the project contributes to:

  • Reduced land degradation
  • Improved soil fertility over time
  • Increased awareness of environmentally responsible farming
  • Adoption of practices that minimize waste and maximize yield

Participants are not just farming—they are actively contributing to climate solutions, one bed at a time.

Strengthening Food Systems and Local Economies

The successful establishment of lettuce production systems strengthens the broader community by:

  • Increasing access to fresh, nutritious vegetables
  • Reducing dependence on external food supply chains
  • Supporting local markets and food vendors
  • Encouraging community-level agribusiness ecosystems

As production scales, the ripple effect will be seen across households, markets, and community health outcomes.

A Model of Precision, Purpose, and Possibility

What makes this milestone exceptional is not just the activity itself, but the intentional structure behind it—from land demarcation to seed planting, every stage reflects a model that is:

  • Replicable across similar communities
  • Sustainable in both environmental and economic terms
  • Inclusive, with young mothers at the center of transformation

Looking Ahead: From Planting to Prosperity

With seeds now in the ground, the focus shifts to crop management, harvesting, and market integration. The foundation has been laid—not just for a successful lettuce harvest, but for long-term agricultural enterprise development.

This is how transformation begins: with land, knowledge, and the courage to plant something new.
